Photographing BP Oil in on Gulf Shore

Photographer Carolyn Cole, with The Los Angeles Times takes pictures of oil from the Deepwater Horizon on the breakwater in the mouth of the Mississippi River where it meets the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana, Tuesday, May, 18, 2010.

The BP leased Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded April 20 and sank after burning, leaking an estimate of more than 210,000 gallons of crude oil per day from the broken pipeline to the sea. Eleven workers are missing, presumed dead.

The first oiled bird brought in for treatment at the Gulf Oil Spill, is now recuperating in stable condition.

The Gannet spends its time in the pool improving its water-proofing at the Fort Jackson, Louisiana wildlife rescue center.

Assessing Water for Oil Contamination

GULF OF MEXICO - (May 7, 2010) Machinery Technician 2nd Class Andrew Johnson, from Atlantic Strike Team National Strike Force, visually examines seawater with possible oil contaminant aboard CGC Harry Claiborne (WLM 561).

Harry Claiborne is currently equipped with a Vessel of Opportunity Skimming System (VOSS), which assists in the removal oil from the ocean surface. The U.S. Coast Guard is working in partnership with BP PLC, local residents, and other federal agencies to aid in preventing the spread of oil following the April 20 explosion on mobile offshore drilling unit Deepwater Horizon.

Pushing Boom Into Place - Oil Spill Protection

The workers were in a race to protect the coast from the BP leased Deepwater Horizon oil platform disaster that has spilled into the Gulf of Mexico. The BP leased oil platform exploded and sank on April 20, 2010 leaking an estimated 5,000 barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico threatening wildlife and the seafood industry in the Gulf.

Nasa Oil Slick Picture of Gulf of Mexico

An estimated 42,000 gallons of oil per day were leaking from an oil well in the Gulf of Mexico in late April, following an explosion at an offshore drilling rig on April 20, 2010. The rig eventually capsized and sank.

These images of the affected area were captured on April 25 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite (top, wider view) and the Advanced Land Imager on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1)satellite (bottom, close up).
